After a 2:0 win over Bolivia in the first round, the United States men’s national soccer team lost 2:1 to Panama so the two are now competing for the No. 2 spot. In the final round of the group phase, Panama is favored to thrash hopeless Bolivia. What this means is that the USMNT players have no other option but to go for a win against group leader Uruguay.

A Must-Win Game for the USMNT
The tournament hosts started their Copa America campaign with an easy 2:0 win over Bolivia. It sounds good, but the fact is that Bolivia is one of the weakest teams competing in this tournament. So, beating them isn’t much of an achievement.
This goes especially because the USMNT failed to beat Panama in the second round. In fact, the Americans lost 2:1. But truth be told, they played with 10 men for most of the game. Plus, one of their goals was ruled out due to an offside.
Despite a solid effort in that game, they ended up losing and are now in trouble. Given that Panama is almost certainly going to beat Bolivia, at least based on the Copa America odds, they have no other option but to try and beat the mighty Uruguay.
One reason to hope they can do it is that they’ll be the ones with fans supporting them. Another, perhaps even bigger reason to feel optimistic, is that Uruguay might play with several backups in the starting lineup.
Uruguay’s B-Squad to Take on the USMNT on July 1
After two rounds of the 2024 Copa America, Uruguay is at the top of Group C with six points and a score difference of 8:1. Given that score differential is the tiebreaker if two teams end on equal points, Uruguay has nothing to worry about.
Whatever happens in the final round, they will almost certainly advance to the quarterfinals. Even if they lost on Monday, they would probably get there from the No. 1 spot in the group. This is why coach Marcelo Bielsa might decide to give some of his men a day off.
USMNT vs. Uruguay Prediction
The USMNT will be without Timothy Weah who got red-carded in the previous game. All the other key players should be ready for kick-off. Over in the Uruguay locker room, the situation is similar, but we probably won’t see all of this team’s biggest stars start the match.
The USMNT vs. Uruguay game is of little importance for Uruguay so coach Bielsa will probably rest Darwin Nunes, Federico Valverde, and a few others. The big question is whether America’s best XI beat Uruguay’s second-best XI.
Based on the USMNT vs. Uruguay odds, the answer is no, but we do think the Americans can cause a sensation.
