Group B preview, fixtures, key players.

Australia and England will be favorites to progress out of Group B at the T20 World Cup 2024. Still, Namibia, Oman, and Scotland have shown previously that they are more than capable of causing an upset or two.

The two most recent champions, along with three associates, make up Group B of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

England, the defending champions of the Men’s T20 World Cup, and Australia, the winners of the 2021 edition, are in Group B. Along with Namibia, Oman and Scotland. Only the top two teams will progress to the Super 8s phase of the event.

While all eyes will be on the big names from Australia and England, Namibia, Oman, and Scotland have enough potential to make the group results interesting.

Australia

Even though they didn’t make it to the final four of their home T20 World Cup in 2022, Australia is one of the favorites to win this one. The skilled team has a history of doing well in ICC events. Moreover, this current team has many players who are in excellent form and have recently done well in ICC events.

Key Players:

Recently, Travis Head has been Australia’s best player in ICC events. He had great games in the ICC World Test Championship final and semi-finals, as well as the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Since June 2023, Australia has won two ICC titles. Head wants to make it, three no doubt there, with a great performance on the field.

Another skill he has is his quick-fire IPL form, where he has scored more than 500 runs at a strike rate just below 200.

Breaking records, Starc is now the most expensive player in the IPL. The Kolkata Knight Riders paid about £2.3 million to get him.

He is best at the power play and will try to hit the hitters in the top order with fast-swinging balls and then hit them on the pads with fast yorkers in the last few overs.

Starc has taken 27 wickets in 20 T20 World Cup games, which is more than any other player in Australia’s history.

England

Team Overview:

If England wants to win again, they will likely stick to the attacking style of play that has worked so well for them in limited-overs cricket.

Jofra Archer’s return to the team is a big plus because it looks like they have all the key players covered.

Mark Wood left his mark on the 2022 event by being able to rattle off batters from other teams, even though he didn’t play in the final games of England’s successful season.

Raw pace does two things for Wood: it helps get that extra zip out of the wicket, and it also makes it harder for the hitter to make decisions about which shot to take by cutting down on the time they have.

Key Players:

Jos Buttler

For Rajasthan, he hit two hundreds in the recent IPL, showing once again how valuable he is as a T20 hitter. Rajasthan made it to the playoffs thanks to his work.

Buttler has scored more T20 runs than any other player in the world since the beginning of 2023. On 22 times, the England captain has scored more than 50 runs.

At the time, he didn’t have any weak spots in his game because he averaged over 30 and hit well over 130 against all types of bowlers.

Adil Rashid, a bowler to keep an eye on.

Even though he is 36 years old, England’s most successful limited-overs spinner is not slowing down.

He has taken more wickets for England in T20s than anyone else this World Cup cycle, and he can’t wait to bowl in the Caribbean.

In his career, he has played five or more T20s in nine different countries. The Caribbean has the best record for him.

With 21 wickets at a rate of less than 14 an over and an economy rate of less than six an over, he should be able to do well in conditions that have helped him in the past.

Squad

Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonathan Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Reece Topley, Mark Wood

Namibia

Team Overview:

In the Africa Regional Qualifier stage, Namibia did very well and earned a spot in the T20 World Cup. They beat six teams, including co-qualifiers Uganda and Test-playing Zimbabwe, and didn’t lose any games in the event. The Eagles have had success against Test teams before. In the last T20 World Cup, they shocked Sri Lanka, and they’d like to do it again in the next one.

Since his return to international play with Namibia, David Wiese has been living the dream. The all-rounder will be ready to go in every way on the field for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be his third straight event this decade.

The Eagles have done well with his “hammer and tongs” style, which uses willow and a smart mix of cuts and slower balls. The big all-rounder will try to light up Group B with his play.

Key Players:

JJ Smit

The right-handed Smit has had a great couple of years. He has scored 151 runs for Namibia at an amazing average of 66.

When the game is almost over, he is most destructive against fast bowlers. His strike rate and average go up to 164 and 84, respectively.

Gerhard Erasmus as a bowler.

The leg-spinner has had a crazy two years. In this World Cup run, he has taken almost 30 wickets at an average of 12. He also gives up less than one run per ball.

He played his first T20 game for a club with the Gulf Giants in the ILT20.

Namibia’s David Wiese is the only player on the team with more T20 wickets this cycle.

Oman

Team Overview:

Oman is the only Asian team in the group, and they have a good mix of competition experience on their team. These guys are going to the T20 World Cup for the third time, and they want to leave a good impression. Their first game, on June 2, against Namibia, a team they’ve beaten twice before, could set the tone for the rest of the event.

Oman’s hopes in the T20 World Cup will depend on their captain, Aqib Ilyas, who is a great top-order player and a top-notch spin bowler. The previous captain, Zeeshan Maqsood, is in the team, so the all-rounder will have a lot of help on the field, even though he was just named leader.

As captain, Aqib has improved his records. In seven games as captain, he has hit 158.38 per cent of the time and averaged 42.5 runs.

Key Players:

Aqib Ilyas

Ilyas has scored the most runs for Oman in the last 18 months and has been named captain for the World Cup.

Seven fifty runs have been scored by the right-hander since the last T20 World Cup, making him one of Oman’s most reliable batters.

A steady and healthy strike rate of 161 in the middle overs helps Oman’s games stay together, allowing experts to bat around him in the powerplay and death overs.

Bilal Khan as a bowler.

Khan is the best left-arm yorker player in Oman. One hundred six of his wickets have come for Oman in T20s. Not a single bowler has taken more than 50.

Khan is used at both the beginning and end of a game, and he has a great record in both.

In the last 18 months, he has taken ten wickets in the power play at an economy rate of 4.96 and 13 wickets in the death overs at an economy rate of 8.9.

Squad

Aqib Ilyas (c), Zeeshan Maqsood, Kashyap Prajapati, Pratik Athavale, Ayaan Khan, Shoaib Khan, Mohammad Nadeem, Naseem Khushi, Mehran Khan, Bilal Khan, Rafiullah, Kaleemullah, Fayyaz Butt, Shakeel Ahmad, Khalid Kail. Reserves: Jatinder Singh, Samay Shrivastava, Sufyan Mehmood, Jay Odedra

Scotland

Team Overview:

Some of Richie Berrington’s players have played a lot of world T20 cricket, and they will look to use that experience to its fullest in their group games in the West Indies.

The Scots are proud of their cricket past, which includes beating their rivals England in an ODI match in 2018. Their first-ever T20I match will be on June 4 in Barbados, and Berrington’s team would be thrilled if they could repeat the result to get their season off to a great start.

Key Players:

Mark Watt

Mark Watt, a left-arm spin bowler, has been Scotland’s main bowler for a while now. The tweaker uses the crease well by changing the point at which he throws the ball based on the batter and the situation in the match. He also changes speeds to keep the other player guessing.

It was clear that his spinning balls worked well against well-known teams when they played Sri Lanka and the West Indies in Zimbabwe last year for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

George Munsey

At the top of the order for Scotland, left-handed batter Munsey will bring his own unique and aggressive way of hitting the ball.

When spinners come his way, he plays a sweep to 40% of them, which is more than any other hitter in the world.

With his sweeps, he is very good at moving the ball around the pitch, and it is a nightmare for any other manager to deal with him.
