South Africa’s cricket team faces a challenge. Lead fast bowler, Gerald Coetzee, won’t play in the second Test against Sri Lanka or the upcoming Pakistan series across all formats. The 23-year-old suffered a groin injury in the first Test in Durban. He had to exit the game early because his right groin was bothering him too much. The medical scans showed a muscle strain. He’ll likely be off the pitch for about six weeks.
The injury happened on the fourth day of the Durban Test. Coetzee only bowled a bit and looked clearly not at his best in his second spell. Still, he managed to score a critical out, catching and bowling Dinesh Chandimal. This happened in the afternoon when Sri Lanka was starting to push back hard.
South Africa’s coach, Shukri Conrad, confirmed later that at lunch, Coetzee had already mentioned feeling off. Despite this, he returned to the match after being strapped. Now that Coetzee’s out, South Africa’s team called upon fast bowler Kwena Maphaka to fill the gap. Maphaka had his first international T20Is match against the West Indies earlier this year. He adds fresh talent to a South African pace attack that’s dealing with a string of injuries at the moment.

Coetzee joins other injured members of the South African team. Wiaan Mulder, an all-rounder, has a broken right middle finger. Nandre Burger, a pacer, has a lower back stress fracture sidelining him for summer. Lungi Ngidi is also out until January, leaving a gap in fast bowling for South Africa.
Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, two of the three main fast bowlers from the Durban Test, are still good to go for the second Test in Gqeberha. Dane Paterson, already on the team, adds another expert’s presence. Yet, the increasing injuries could be an issue with the busy cricket schedule ahead.

South Africa’s team is ready to play Sri Lanka in the second Test on December 5-9 at St George’s Park. Then, they will welcome Pakistan for a complete tour. It will have three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests, but they will miss Coetzee, a high-quality bowler. This situation will put South Africa’s strength to the test, especially their fast bowlers. Despite these hurdles, they still hope their remaining speed bowlers, led by Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, will succeed.
The points from the ICC World Test Championship are at stake. And, as they prepare for the 2025 Champions Trophy, these next matches are key. Coetzee’s fast pace and track record of making critical plays have been valuable. His absence leaves a big hole in the lineup.
Kwena Maphaka will try to use this chance and stand out. The team will have to lean on their seasoned players a lot to get through this tough point.
