Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma’s scintillating display gave Mumbai Indians a rare win in the Indian Premier League 2024. In addition, Captain Hardik Pandya’s pace and veteran leggie Piyush Chawla’s put brakes on Sunrisers Hyderabad batting line-up.
Here is how you can calculate the follow-on in test cricket.
IPL match highlights: Third highest partnership of the season
Riding on Suryakumar’s 51-ball hundred and his unbroken third-wicket association of 143 off just 79 balls with Tilak – the third highest partnership of the season. Mumbai Indians overhauled the target of 174 with 16 balls to spare.
Mumbai Indians was in trouble as Tilak took guard in the fifth over. After the Sunrisers pace battery reduced the host team to 31 for three. Mumbai Indians risked wasting the bowlers’ hard work with another weak top-order performance.
Ishan Kishan (straightened by Marco Jansen to be caught in slips), Rohit Sharma (missed a Cummins pull), and Naman Dhir (slashed Bhuvneshwar to point) were defeated. Even Suryakumar struggled against Cummins. Failing to bat on his first three deliveries that skipped his blade.
In the seventh over, Suryakumar faced Marco Jansen, changing the game. Suryakumar’s behind-the-wicket inventiveness forced Jansen over fine-leg fence twice in a 22-run over. As Suryakumar tortured the Sunrisers, Tilak performed flawlessly.

He even settled the score with Cummins with three consecutive pull shots in the 17th over. Then, putting MI on the verge of victory and himself on the verge of a century. Furthermore, he reached both milestones with the following ball he faced, lofting S. Natarajan over long-off for a six.
Without Chawla and Hardik’s ball-playing tandem, MI would have faced a much more difficult task.
The duo took three important wickets – Travis Head, Nitish KumarReddy, and Heirich Klaasen. For only six runs in 11 balls, taking SRH from 90 for two to 96 for five. The duo added three more wickets in the 16th and 17th overs to put MI ahead before Cummins’ cameo enabled SRH reach 170-run mark.
Remarkable performance after T20 squad announcement, or is it just a regular IPL coincidence?
Soon after India’s T20 World Cup roster was announced, an odd tendency surfaced. The games after the team announcement saw Hardik Pandya, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube duck, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Suryakumar Yadav fall cheaply. And Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh leak over 50 runs each. Jasprit Bumrah was the outlier again, as he has all season for Mumbai Indians.
Until Monday. In eight innings, Suryakumar had scored 232 runs, which was disappointing. He then unleashed his magnificent, vintage boundary hitting against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Hence, ending all doubts about his form heading into the T20 World Cup 2024.
The World-Cup-bound players’ tendency reversed before Suryakumar’s fireworks, when Hardik got the night’s best numbers of 3 for 31. That said he may play the fifth bowler in the India XI at the World Cup next month due to his fitness and wicket-taking skills. Hardik will again be a key finisher and third pace-bowler for India when they play two spinners and two quicks, like he did in the ODI World Cup six months ago.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Hardik had “no replacement” in bowling, thus his form and fitness would have given him and the team management confidence.
IPL match highlights: Powerplay magic
In the powerplay against Kolkata Knight Riders, he sent Sunil Narine back before dismissing a set Manish Pandey. Hardik bowled a new ball against Lucknow Super Giants a week earlier, making KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda miss. After four straight losses, Hardik’s three-for against SRH would have been sweeter because it set up a smashing win for MI. Hardik came on after the powerplay and tried to hit tough lengths and get the ball to nip around.
“I like bowling to the areas and see what the situation requires [me to do],” he said at the presentation. “If the wicket has grip, I do it, if not, like today, I thought the ball was nipping around and bowling at the right areas would be a right option and I think it worked.”
After six overs, with SRH at 56 for 1, Hardik joined the assault. Nuwan Thushara and Anshul Kamboj, who was making his IPL debut, were MI’s lone speed bowlers. Kamboj gave up 32 runs in his opening two overs. Scores far higher than 173 might have been possible for SRH had Hardik not volunteered to bowl sixth that evening.
Both he and Indian cricket will benefit from this. “His bowling performances recently have earned him a spot on the MI World Cup squad,” MI batting coach Kieron Pollard remarked of Hardik. “It’s all coming at the right time, though one thing for us is that we’ve never doubted the ability and the talent in that individual.”
Who is Anshul Kamboj?
Indian Premier League debutant Anshul Kamboj, 23, made his Mumbai Indians debut against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
Anshul is a right-arm medium pacer from Karnal, Haryana.
Anshul is the second Indian player after Naman Dhir to debut for the five-time IPL champion in 2024.
In the IPL 2024 Auction, MI bought the player for INR 20 Lakhs.
Kamboj, from Karnal, was a Royal Challengers Bengaluru net bowler.
Kamboj ripped Travis Head’s stumps out of his socket in his second over versus SRH. But when it was proven that Kamboj had overstepped. Head was given a chance to save face. Kamboj opted to bowl to Head again in his third over, but Nuwan Thushara dropped a simple catch at deep third. Two balls later, he bowled Mayank Agarwal, giving him his maiden wicket in the IPL.
